An Israeli soldier was seriously wounded and three others lightly injured on Wednesday in southern Lebanon after an explosive drone attack. Sgt. Idan Fooks was later killed in a drone attack near Taybeh, marking the first combat fatality since a ceasefire was declared on April 16. The wounded soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment, and their families were notified. Reports indicated dramatic footage captured the moment a drone exploded near the helicopter evacuating the injured personnel.

Hezbollah's Evolving Drone Threat

Hezbollah's FPV drones present an increasing challenge for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah launches these drones from long distances, originating from areas where IDF forces are not present. The drones carry fiber-optic cables, a feature that prevents electronic jamming and significantly complicates both detection and interception efforts.

The IDF has previously conducted strikes against explosives labs where operatives assembled explosive material onto drones, along with cameras and other equipment. Electronic warfare forces deployed in the field are actively working to counter this evolving threat, but Hezbollah has also launched drones specifically targeting these units. Rocket and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) launches targeting Israeli communities have since resumed and intensified.

Escalation and Security Measures

Sirens warning of an aircraft infiltration sounded in Kiryat Shmona after the Israeli Air Force intercepted what the military described as a “suspicious aerial target” launched from Lebanon. Additionally, sirens indicating missile and rocket fire were activated in Manara and Margaliot due to concerns over falling debris from the interception.

In response to the ongoing security situation, the Home Front Command imposed new restrictions. Gatherings in communities along the confrontation line, as well as in Meron, Bar Yochai, Or HaGanuz, and Safsufa, would be limited to 1,500 people at least until Monday evening. The narrow security Cabinet discussed the possibility of holding the Meron celebration, scheduled for May 5, amidst these security concerns.

The IDF is continuing clearance operations within the security zone up to the yellow line. These operations involve blowing up buildings, dismantling terror infrastructure, and engaging terrorists. So far, the IDF has reported killing approximately 50 terrorists in these ongoing efforts.

Lebanon's Stance on Negotiations

President Trump previously advocated for direct negotiations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, a proposal Aoun declined in favor of indirect talks. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated that Lebanon is "not heading toward normalization, but toward peace," and described any meeting with Netanyahu as "premature." Salam indicated that Lebanon requires negotiations with Israel alongside internal discussions aimed at expanding state authority. He added that Beirut would re-evaluate plans concerning Hezbollah's weapons following recent developments. A ceasefire would form the basis for any future round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Washington.

Lebanese media reported strikes on Thursday morning in the Haret Hreik area of Dahieh, a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut. In the initial days of the ceasefire, two soldiers were killed by explosive devices that appeared to have been planted before the truce took effect. Sgt. Idan Fooks' uncle stated that Fooks' partner, serving as a surveillance soldier, witnessed the entire incident on her screens. "She saw the incident as an observation soldier, saw the wounded and asked if Idan was there. They told her he wasn’t, but she had a feeling he was. In retrospect, it turned out she saw her boyfriend, whom she loved so much and who loved her, killed in Lebanon. She is in shock, like all of us," Fooks’ uncle said.
