The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are reviewing a video published by Lebanese media on Wednesday that shows an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary in southern Lebanon. Outrage is growing over the incident, particularly a photo depicting an Israeli soldier pushing a cigarette into the mouth of the statue, which Lebanese reports describe as a desecration of the religious figure. The footage has prompted strong reactions, especially within Christian communities, both in Lebanon and internationally.

The incident occurred as Israeli forces operate in areas of southern Lebanon. Lebanese reports specifically accused the soldier of desecrating the statue, sparking widespread condemnation across various platforms. The IDF's review follows the rapid spread of the video and accompanying images online. This incident marks another instance of alleged misconduct by Israeli soldiers in the region.

New Desecration Allegations Surface

The video of the Virgin Mary statue surfaced less than a month after another incident involving an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, who was filmed smashing a statue of Jesus in the Christian village of Debel in southern Lebanon. The IDF confirmed the authenticity of that earlier video, describing the incident as serious. The soldier responsible for smashing the Jesus statue, along with the soldier who filmed the act, were subsequently removed from combat roles and sentenced to 30 days in military prison. Six other soldiers involved in the Debel incident were also summoned for disciplinary discussions. At the time, the IDF stated that regulations regarding conduct around religious institutions and symbols had been clarified to troops and would be reinforced. This clarification aimed to prevent future incidents of religious desecration by military personnel.

Past Incidents and IDF Response

Following the earlier incident in Debel, the Israel Defense Forces placed a new statue at the site in coordination with local residents, replacing the one that had been damaged. The findings of the investigation into that prior event were presented to IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Northern Command chief Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo. The Catholic Church had condemned the video of the desecrated statue in Debel, expressing deep concern over the act. The earlier incident also caused significant international damage to Israel, fueling claims that Israel harms Christians and their religious freedom. This damage showed the sensitivity of such actions and their potential impact on diplomatic relations and public perception.

Christian Community Reacts

Israeli army officials have stated that the incident, which depicts an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue in southern Lebanon, is currently under review. The officials confirmed that "the ‘matter is under examination,’" following the widespread circulation of the video on social media and Lebanese news outlets. This statement comes amid growing outrage within Christian communities, particularly in Lebanon and internationally, over what is being described as an act of religious desecration. The ongoing investigation aims to address the actions of the soldier involved and the circumstances surrounding the incident in southern Lebanon, with the IDF reiterating its commitment to upholding religious sensitivities.
