Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces seized approximately 780 kg of explosives at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint on 5 October 2026. Security personnel discovered the cache, which included both TNT and Composition C-4, inside a van stopped at the location. The operation occurred as authorities continue to monitor transit routes between the Bekaa region and Beirut. Officials have not released details regarding the origin or the intended destination of the seized materials. The recovery of the explosives follows intensified security measures implemented by the Internal Security Forces across key transit points. Investigation into the incident remains active as authorities process the materials confiscated during the search.
The Scale of Human Loss
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that more than 4,300 people have been killed in the country since 2 March 2026. This figure represents a portion of the broader loss of life recorded over the past three years. Official records indicate that nearly 9,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since 2023. These fatalities have contributed to significant population shifts across the nation. Approximately 330,000 people remain internally displaced in Lebanon as of 1 October 2026, according to recent government data. Aid organizations continue to track these figures as the number of displaced persons grows across various districts. Authorities remain focused on monitoring the needs of those forced to leave their homes while the total count of casualties continues to rise.
Israeli Occupation and Destruction
Israeli forces currently occupy over 600 square kilometres of Lebanese territory. Within these controlled areas of southern Lebanon, military operations have destroyed 48 out of approximately 60 villages.
Nicholas Blandford, a non-resident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programmes, assessed the reach of these actions. "So in effect, the Israeli occupation extends far beyond where they are physically deployed," he stated. "It's been quite intense over the last month."
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea characterized the ongoing situation as "the most dangerous incident in years." Authorities continue to monitor the impact of these territorial changes as the scale of physical destruction across southern districts becomes increasingly apparent to local observers and international monitoring groups.
Military Dynamics and Analysis
Hezbollah drone attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 12 Israeli soldiers. Following the seizure of explosives at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint, Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah acknowledged on 15 October 2026 that the materials belonged to the group and were intended for use against Israel.
David Wood, a senior Lebanon analyst at the International Crisis Group (ICG), noted the complexities surrounding these developments. "While it might be true that Hezbollah continues to operate militarily, despite the Lebanese government wanting to have a state monopoly over arms, it would be much harder for Hezbollah to do that if Israel were more willing to grant actual concessions as part of its negotiations with Lebanon and to create a viable and fair security arrangement between the two countries," he said.
Freddy Khoueiry, RANE’s lead MENA and defence analyst, assessed the tactical objectives behind the group's current maneuvers. "Hezbollah is likely attempting to restore enough capability to at some point defend against a potential Israeli preemptive campaign and at the same time preserve the option to participate in another regional conflict involving Iran," Khoueiry stated.
