Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on 21 October 2026 that any rocket or drone fire targeting Israel will result in military strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. These potential operations represent a shift in tactical targeting within Lebanon.
Katz further threatened to expand the current Israeli occupation toward the Nabatieh and Litani areas. This expansion would occur if Hezbollah joins an Iranian attack against Israel. The warning links the geographic scope of Israeli military activity in Lebanon directly to the actions of Hezbollah in a broader regional conflict. Israeli forces remain prepared to strike the specified locations should these conditions be met.
Scope of Military Destruction
Israeli forces have demolished more than 60 Lebanese villages, an operation that resulted in the destruction of 23,000 homes. These military actions occurred across the southern region of the country.
In addition to the physical destruction of these residential areas, Israel has established a 700-square-kilometer security zone inside Lebanon. This territory is currently under military control as part of the broader occupation. The footprint of this zone encompasses the impacted villages and surrounding infrastructure. Military planners maintain active control over this designated area, which sits between the international border and the areas identified for potential further expansion by the Israeli government.
Humanitarian Crisis and Displacement
Approximately 200,000 residents have been displaced in Lebanon due to Israeli military actions. These individuals have fled their homes as military operations continue to impact infrastructure and residential areas across the southern region.
Separate figures indicate that since 2 March, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed and injured thousands of people. These same military actions have resulted in the displacement of over 1.5 million residents. The total number of displaced persons reflects the ongoing impact of the conflict on the civilian population within the country.
Lebanon and Israel signed a US-sponsored framework agreement on 26 June. The document established a plan for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. It also included provisions for the disarmament of Hezbollah. The agreement served as a formal attempt to address the military presence and the security status of the border region between the two nations.
