Escalating Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah

Lebanese authorities seized a car containing approximately 800 kilograms of C-4 and TNT at a checkpoint in Dahr Al-Baidar late last week. Two Hezbollah members were detained in connection with the explosives shipment. Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah publicly acknowledged the vehicle belonged to the group, stating, "The resistance’s weapons are directed at the Israeli enemy." Justice Minister Adel Nassar declared, "Any action outside the framework of the Lebanese state is rejected." MP Ashraf Rifi criticized the incident, noting, "The resistance must not become a pretext for bypassing the state or confiscating the will of the Lebanese."

Political Reactions and Condemnation

President Joseph Aoun conducted a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 8 October. Both officials used the conversation to discuss regional developments.

Regional Stability and Diplomatic Outlook

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a warning on 14 October regarding potential regional escalation. He stated that if Hezbollah participates in an attack against Israel, the group’s strongholds in the southern suburbs of Beirut would be struck, an action he claimed would result in the displacement of over one million Shiites.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh visited Beirut on 15 October to address the ongoing volatility. During his visit, he told reporters that the chances of reaching political understandings between Lebanon and Israel are almost nonexistent.

MP Ashraf Rifi addressed the broader implications of these tensions. He criticized the internal political situation, stating, "A project that drags Lebanon into wars, places its national decision outside its legitimate institutions and exposes its people and resources to risks that do not serve its interests cannot acquire the label of patriotism simply by wrapping it in resistance slogans."

Impact on Southern Lebanon

Israeli media reports indicate the military-controlled security zone in southern Lebanon covers about 700 square kilometers. The operational area remains under strict military supervision as part of ongoing regional security measures.

More than 60 villages located within this security zone have been largely levelled. According to these reports, the destruction includes approximately 23,000 homes that were rendered uninhabitable.

Approximately 200,000 residents of the security zone remain displaced. These individuals continue to live outside their original communities due to the extensive damage and the ongoing military presence in the area.
